The rule of thumb that I go by is: 10 times the amount of max buy-in that your limit allows. For example, I play $1/$2 no-limit hold em. The max buy-in for this game is $200 so I need at least $2000 in my account to buffer any big losses.
But if you’re not serious, then 10-15 is okay. Just be sure to understand that if you suffer any bad beats that will stack you, you can only survive about 2 or 3 of them.
